My morning routine is easy - be it with the Corona implied lockdown or not: I start out with my morning sport using the 7 minutes app and then follow up (after a shower of course) with a freshly brewed filter coffee. Drinking my coffee and browsing through the newspaper are my dedicated 15-20 minutes every day. So, when the lockdown started, I immediately checked my stock of coffee beans and topped up from my favorite suppliers.
My top filter coffee (beans) provider in Switzerland
These roasters below are part of my top group - don't take it as a ranking.
The roastery is run by Denise and Simone, two ladies located with their roastery in Unterlunkhofen. I got to know them and their coffee a few years back when they were running a wonderful little coffee shop in the neighbourhood of Wiedikon. Unfortunately, they decided to solely focus on roasting after a while, so I had to search for a new coffee spot for Saturdays. Fortunately, they feature a very good online shop. They always roast on Mondays, if you place your order before Sunday at Midnight, it will get roasted the day after and shipped to you right afterwards! Always a pleasure to open the letter box and smell this very indulging aroma! They have a small assortment of filter and espresso coffee. The filter coffee is normally roasted quite light - how I like it. My favorites are the Kenya Mukurweini AB (CHF 15.50 / 250 gr) and the Brazil Diamond (CHF 10.50 / 250 gr).
The proof that I can even forget about rivalry if it comes to coffee. Kaffeemacher.ch is a roastery from Basel (Münchenstein to be exact) - the fierce opponent in soccer of my club! Nevertheless, they do really excellent filter coffee. My favorites: Simbi from Ruanda (14 CHF / 250 gr), Alessandro from Brazil (14 CHF / 250 gr). Kaffeemacher.ch also feature a store in the main station from Basel - easy to grab one on your way home / if traveling through Basel. Their homepage is also a good source for all kind of information on coffee (e.g. how many days after roasting the coffee tastes best, etc.). Interesting note: they use their profits to develop a coffee farm in Nicaragua together with the owner, they are co-owner nowadays. So if you buy their Santa Rita coffee from Nicaragua - it's really 100% from in their control!
A rather young roastery from Bern, they only started out in 2018. Initially, they were focused solely on filter coffee but recently added an espresso assortment as well. Just recently, they also opened up an own little café in Bern off Eigerplatz. My favorites in their product range are: El Salvador Chalatenango (11.50 CHF / 250 gr.) and Costa Rica El Mirador (14.00 CHF / 250 gr.). Sustainability is a big topic with them, e.g. they want to invest 1% of their yearly turnover in sustainable projects. Of course, they also emphasize the origin, working conditions and sustainability of their coffee sources.
As said, these are my top suppliers to which I regularly turn to stock up coffee beans.
Below a laundry list of further roasteries I tried throughout the last months and years and worth honorary mention in my humble opinion:
Stoll Kaffee Native to Zurich and a pioneer in specialty coffee - a sure bet!
Stadtrösterei Solothurn It's the specialty roastery of well-established Oetterli Kaffee. Roast master Panos Megalessis won the title as best roaster in Switzerland in 2018 and followed it up with a 5th place in the World Cup - that's how I discovered Stadtrösterei.
Five Elephant Berlin is a mecca of specialty coffee! So when on a business trip, for sure I made some time to explore 2-3 roasteries - Five Elephant was my favorite in Berlin.
