During our recent stay in Zermatt, we wanted to go for a dinner with my wife's family. I was tasked to find a good, cosy restaurant for us. Not that easy to find a table for 5 people in Zermatt during skiing season on short notice, especially as I fancy good food. Fortunately, I was able to get hold of a table in the newly opened "Brasserie Uno"!
Brasserie Uno
The restaurant is located close to the church in Zermatt - I would say it's quite in the middle of Zermatt. It's in the same building as the Hotel Allalin on the right part of the building when looking at the building.
Ambience & service
The interieur lets you think of a chalet and vintage style at the same time - but I liked it. The chairs feature a little fur or a blanket - a nice detail. The room itself is actually quite small but it never felt cramped for me. However, it can get loud when it is fully booked (and they are fully booked, up until end of January the guy told me!). A nice part of Brasserie Uno is the open kitchen - I have a faible for it as it is always cool to watch the Chef at work, gives you a more intimate restaurant / cooking experience in my opinion.
Service was swift - the very accommodating waitress guided us to our table upon entrance and immediately took our drink order. She quickly came back with the drinks and a blackboard with the menu written on it.
Food
Surprise, surprise, the food is like in a Brasserie!
They offer a tasting menu for 99 CHF made up of the highlights from their menu card - however, it's only offered for the entire table. Difficult to align 5 people for a tasting menu, so we opted to go for à la carte. The menu features a selection of about 5-7 starters priced between 15 - 25 CHF. As I already had apéro at Elsi's bar beforehand that day, I decided to skip the starter.
Regarding the main course, I was tempted by the meatballs made from elk (!) or their fish dish. I finally decided to go for the fish. It was a pike-perch (zander) on a bed of two sorts of grains. The cooking time of the fish was right to the point - a key criteria for me when eating fish, too often you get a fish fillet which is very dry as it is overcooked.
Overall, I was pleased with my dish - cooking time was good, nice seasoning, all in all a dish I would expect in a Brasserie.
Conclusion
Not that easy to please my mother-in-law with a restaurant choice - but I got a thumbs up from her for the good atmosphere/food ratio at Brasserie Uno - I think that says it all :-)!
